All You Need To Know About Speeding Violation Ticket
Most people are inclined to drive above the speed limit, especially on highways. Like it or not, its an offense and can get you in serious trouble at times. Over speeding does not only put your life at stake but it is equally dangerous for many others too. If you are caught over speeding in Canada, you will be issued speeding tickets which may affect you in different ways. It may have a negative impact on your driving record, your auto insurance rates etc.
Different types of speeding tickets in Canada
There are different kind of tickets which are issued to the people who over speed. Mainly, speeding violation tickets can be of 3 types:
Ticket with a fine: (Part I Provincial Offences Notice)
This is the most common speeding ticket which has a fine coupled with pints on it. If you have a dispute about the ticket issued, you must have to appear in the court.
Summons to appear in Court: (Part I Provincial Offence Summons)
This is not a common type. It has a court date mentioned on it and the driver is supposed to appear in the court. The judge can suspend the driver’s license for a month for speeding over 50km/h. This ticket fines $500 maximum.
Summons to appear in court: (Part III Provincial Offence Summons)
This ticket is issued if you are guilty of speeding over 50km/h in the community safe zones. The ticket also mentions a date of appearance in the court. It fines $12 per kilometre. Your license might be suspended for a month by the judge.
Speeding Fines as per Canada’s Highway Traffic Act
These fines are defined on the basis of kilometres per hour you have gone above the speed limit. According to the Highway Traffic Act Schedule 43, Schedule B forms the following speeding fines for the maximum speed limits.

In addition to that these speeding fines and tickets might increase if you are guilty of:
1.   Speeding in an area where the construction is in process.
2.   Speeding in combination with other violation causing an accident like careless driving, DUI or stunt driving.
3.   Speeding in a construction zone where the workers are present.
4.   Speeding in the community safe zones or in school zone.
5.   Surprisingly you can be given speeding tickets without demerit points if you have violated minor speeding limits like 0-15km/h.
What are the speeding ticket points?
By over speeding, you will receive demerit points. These points will be based on how speedy you drove at the time when you were issued a traffic ticket.

Will the speeding tickets affect my car insurance?
If you have been guilty of over speeding and speeding tickets have been issued to you it can influence your car insurance rates too. The sternness of the tickets defines the terms of your auto insurance. Say for example speeding over 50 km/h will have different impact as compared to speeding over 15 km/h speed limits.
Well, do keep this mind that the speeding tickets will only impact your car insurance only when the insurance company has been successful in finding out about your speeding ticket record. It is not possible for them to find out that until have paid for it or have been convicted by the court for over speeding.  The only way your insurance company would know about your speeding tickets would be at the time of renewal of your insurance policy. It is a common practice for the insurance companies to contact the Ministry of Transportation to check the driving record during the process of policy renewal.
What percentage of car insurance will be increased?
It is not necessary that your speeding tickets will increase the insurance rate for sure. You will be spared if you have received only one speeding ticket for a minor violation. But if your case is stands otherwise, you might see an increase in the insurance rates. Well how much? This will be decided by the policies outlined by the insurance companies.
Would it impact on my required car insurance coverage plan?
Speeding ticket will impact that as well. It does impact the insurance coverage plan too. But don’t worry a single ticket might not have any impact on your coverage plan but having more than 2ot 3 tickets in less time or having a major speeding ticket for speeding over 50km/h or being caught of stunt driving could definitely make your insurance coverage plan a bit risky. You might be labelled as ‘high-risk driver’ by the insurance company.
Cutting it short, your insurance company will decide based this based on their rules and policies. But one thing is definite that your speeding tickets will add up to the demerits. Better beware of your speed limit and get the speed slow down as you are driving in Canada.
For how long I will be considered among the ‘black-listed’ ones?
This is a frequently asked question that for how long my speeding tickets will stay in records to affect my insurance? It stays on your MTO for three years from the date of conviction.
Do the Photo Radar and Camera issue me the speed tickets?
Well, its quite safe if you are caught for over speeding by red light photo radar or camera because it will have no impact either on your driving license, insurance rates or on your driving record. It will not even add to your demerit points. It is because the camera doesn’t have the driver’s license record. So no matter who is driving, the owner is supposed to pay the fine, which he receives via email.
The speed rules are same and are applied evenly all across the Canada
If you are a Canadian resident and have received a speeding ticket in any part or any province of Canada, you will be fined without discrimination. If you are driving out speedy while being out of province, you will get an Out of Province Speeding ticket like OOPS. And don’t forget this could also impact your insurance rates. So being vigilant can help you safe away from all sorts of trouble.
